The Habitats of European Oak (Quercus) in Poland and General Oak Wood Color Issues

2025, Smolarek, Edmund, Kowalska, Jolanta, Pałubicki, Bartosz, Wieruszewski, Marek

Oak wood color plays a critical role in veneer production, where visual consistency directly affects material value. However, production choices are still often based on experience rather than systematic scientific data. Although many studies have examined individual factors affecting wood color, such as species or drying conditions, few have brought together ecological and industrial perspectives. This review addresses that gap by examining how habitat, species characteristics, and processing parameters influence color variation in Quercus robur and Quercus petraea. A structured literature review was conducted using Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar, complemented by industry observations. The results show that site-specific factors—such as soil type, forest type, and regional climate—can significantly affect oak wood color, in some cases more than genetic differences. Drying methods, wood age, and log storage also contribute to variations in color and homogeneity. These findings highlight the potential for better raw material selection and processing strategies, leading to improved quality, sustainability, and economic efficiency in veneer production. Remaining knowledge gaps—particularly in predictive modeling and veneer-specific studies—point to important areas for future research.

Video Extensometer Characterization of Mechanical Properties in Modified Fibreboard Layers

2026, Wołpiuk, Marcin, Pałubicki, Bartosz, Wieruszewski, Marek, Kociszewski, Marek, Uniwersytet Przyrodniczy w Poznaniu

The resistance of screws to being pulled out of wood-based panels depends largely on the mechanical properties of the substrate. The properties of medium-density fibreboard (MDF) are locally reinforced in the area where the fastener is embedded. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of using polyurethane (PUR) adhesives as a reinforcing agent. The aim of the study is to determine the elastic properties of individual layers of MDF boards modified with a polyurethane agent (PUR 555.6) applied to the outer and inner layers of the material. Deformations during axial compression of multilayer samples were measured using a digital optical video extensometer with digital image correlation (DIC). The reinforced board showed a significant increase in stiffness in all main orthotropic directions. The stiffness of the inner layers increased by approximately 100%–160%, while that of the outer layers increased by 30%–60%. The shear modulus increased by 60%–70% in the inner layers and by up to 45% in the outer layers. The results confirm the effectiveness of the optical video extensometer method as a fast and reliable technique for determining the mechanical properties of modified layered wood composites.

The Optimization of the Strength of Wood Adhesive Joints Supported by Steel Fasteners in Furniture Components

2024, Jarecki, Witold, Pałubicki, Bartosz, Wołpiuk, Marcin, Trociński, Adrian, Orlikowski, Dariusz, Wieruszewski, Marek

The strength properties of softwood components with bonded joints reinforced with fasteners were investigated and compared. Initial tests of the strength of the glue joints were carried out, with a change in the type of adhesive used. The application method significantly influenced the shear strength of the joint. With the adhesive and pre-bonding systems used, the shear strength of the adhesive joint of pine wood (Pinus silvestris L.) with PUR and PVAC resin was determined. The industrial results were 31% lower than in the shear test of the wooden joint bonded with PVAC glue. In terms of transverse shear force with staples, the joint has a transverse holding force that is higher than components connected with screws or nails. As the number of glue sticks increased, the shear strength of the pine wood increased. The strengths of the joined components in the glue roller method had an intermediate value. They did not differ significantly between the two-row gluing systems used. An increase in the force required to shear the bonded joint was observed for the different adhesive systems, the fasteners used, and their density.

Elements of Designing Upholstered Furniture Sandwich Frames Using Finite Element Method

2022, Matwiej, Łukasz Remigiusz, Wieruszewski, Marek, Wiaderek, Krzysztof, Pałubicki, Bartosz

This paper presents an approach to the design of an upholstered furniture frame using the finite element method and empirical studies. Three-dimensional discrete models of upholstered furniture frames were developed taking into account orthotropic properties of solid pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) without and with details strengthening their structure in the form of glue joints and upholstery staples. Using the CAE Autodesk Inventor Nastran finite element method, linear static analyses were performed by simulating normative loading. The finite element method was performed considering the experimentally determined stiffness coefficients of the PCAC adhesive and staple joints. As a result, stress, displacement, and equivalent strain distributions were obtained for upholstered furniture frame models with stapled corner joints. The deformation and strength behavior of the upholstered furniture frames was improved by reinforcing with a wood strip. A new approach to the design of upholstered furniture frame frames using the FEM method with stapled component connections was developed and tested. The results of the study can be applied in the optimization of upholstered furniture construction.
