In Poland, family Bufonidae is represented by three species of toads. They can be found in areas inhabited by humans, which comes with the risk of contact between them and companion animals. Dogs encounter with toads may lead to severe poisoning/toxicosis. Being threatened, toads secrete a complex mixture of different biologically active components, including: bufotoxins, bufotenines and epinephrine, from their skin glands. Ingestion of toad toxins can lead to a variety of symptoms in dogs and cats, most of which are not pathognomonic. Treatment of intoxication/toxicosis focuses on rinsing oral cavity with water, followed by fluid therapy and heart rate stabilisation. Cases of toxicosis caused by contact with fire salamander are also noted. Awareness of these cases, both in veterinarians and animal owners, can lead to a mindful attitude towards local wildlife, protection of companion animals, as well as endangered species of amphibians
