Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) play a role in the process of imparting hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties to the product, friction properties, to increase strength in the process of joining layers of multilayer ceramic-metal structures. There is a need for a simple, cheap, and accessible method that allows you to quickly monitoring the properties of the surface after processing and their change over time. Since hydrophilic surfaces, for example, are formed on steels, as a rule, immediately after treatment, and hydrophobic properties are acquired only after a certain period, lasting from 20 to 50 days, a method is needed to control the change in the microrelief over time. In the present work, a method for determining the surface microstructure from the projection of a reflected gliding beam of a helium-neon laser is studied. The possibility of using the method of irradiating a nanostructured surface with a sliding infrared beam of a helium-neon laser to qualitatively determine the structure of the LIPSS surface from the diffraction pattern of the reflected laser beam projection is shown.
